Airlines capitalize on this trend with "stopover" programs, some even offering free hotels and food. Airlines have jumped on this growing trend with built-in "stopover" programs, which can come with free or discounted hotels, excursions, transportation, and food at the layover destination. Essentially, you can't intentionally book a longer layover to quality for the free stopover hotel. San Francisco CNN —San Francisco is suing its neighbor across the Bay over a plan to change the name of Oakland’s airport. “People do not know that Oakland is by the San Francisco Bay. San Francisco filed suit in federal court Thursday, requesting the court prohibit Oakland from using the name, alleging that Oakland plans to “intentionally and knowingly capitalize off of confusion.”The City of San Francisco owns a trademark on “San Francisco International Airport,” commonly referred to by its three-letter code, SFO. It does not need the same San Francisco as part of its airport to stand out,” she penned in a letter to the Port of Oakland. CNN —The extraordinary discovery of a decades-old message in a bottle has inspired alumni of a Long Island, New York, high school to remember their beloved late science teacher. Merci, Gracias, Danke, Thank you, Shawn and Ben,” the letter read, addressed from Mattituck High School on Long Island in October 1992. Courtesy Adam TravisAmazement and wonder bubbled up in the Mattituck High School Alumni Facebook group about how the letter remained intact for 32 years – and how it was found just a few miles from the high school. “The message in a bottle project was one of his favorite and longest-standing projects over the years,” Brooks said. Earth science teacher Richard E. Brooks often assigned the "message in a bottle project," his son said.

Soon, factories processing whale oil, meat and bones sprung up on the islands. After crude oil was discovered in 1859, the demand for whale oil decreased dramatically in the following decades. In 1990, French national Serge Viallele set up the first whale watching company in the archipelago, on Pico island. The number of whale watching boats is strictly limited by a license system, which issues a maximum number per island – or per zone for the smaller islands. For now, whale watching remains a major draw for visitors to the islands.

The Panama-registered Fremantle Highway was transporting 2,857 cars from Germany to Egypt, 25 of them electric. An electric car was the suspected source of the blaze, a coastguard spokesperson said, adding that the ship was still burning. The crew had tried, but failed, to extinguish the fire, the coastguard statement said. The injured crew were taken by helicopter to medical facilities on the mainland. A fire destroyed thousands of luxury cars on a ship off the coast of Portugal's Azores islands in February last year.

The fire began on Tuesday night on the 199-metre Panama-registered Fremantle Highway, which was en route from Germany to Egypt, forcing several crew members to jump overboard. Rescue ships sprayed water onto the burning boat to cool it down, but using too much water risked its sinking, the Dutch coastguard said. The coastguard said on its website that the cause of the fire was unknown, but a coastguard spokesperson had earlier told Reuters it began near an electric car. Coastguard spokesperson Edwin Granneman said salvage experts were trying to work out next steps for the burning boat. Six months ago, having just won the Australian Open one year after being deported from the country, Novak Djokovic collapsed in the arms of his family and his coaches in a moment of strained ecstasy. He had drawn even with Rafael Nadal in the race for most Grand Slam singles titles. 23 and jetted off to the Azores for a hiking vacation with his wife. Gone is the pugnacious battler carrying around a career full of angst. His default facial expression, something like an inquisitive scowl, has been replaced with a relaxed grin.

Deep-sea expeditions are "very safe" as long as established safety protocols are followed, Ray Dalio said. "Diving in a classed submersible is no more risky than taking a commercial flight or driving in a car," he said. The billionaire investor is the founder of nonprofit initiative OceanX, which is currently planning explorations in Norway's fjords, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. But billionaire investor Ray Dalio, also the founder of the nonprofit ocean exploration initiative OceanX, has pushed back against the paranoia. As author of 'Principles', a guide to his management and investment philosophy, Dalio often weighs in on financial and economic matters.

After our fill of scampering, we went to nearby Ponta da Ferraria to soak. A bubbling hot spring beneath the lava cliffs creates a heated cove right within the ocean. We followed the trail of sunbathers and adventure seekers past the indoor spa to the black, sometimes jagged, rocks where scores of people lay. Warm and churning, invigorating and intimidating, the water bounced us between the rocky edges and a rope strewn across the waterway for safe-holding. We parked and walked to the trailhead, the wind whipping against us, stirring whitecaps on the volcanic lake thousands of feet below.

The Tiny Craft Mapping Superstorms at Sea Shortly after dawn on Sept. 30, 2021, Richard Jenkins watched a Category 4 hurricane overrun his life’s work. That August, a sister ship, SD 1031, successfully entered Tropical Storm Henri, but only in its early stages. Hurricane research, modeling and forecasting requires many terabytes of data for every square mile the storm passes through, including vitally important sea-level data from inside a storm. The next day, the depression was upgraded to a tropical storm and officially given the name Sam. And four months later, Tropical Storm Megi killed more than 150, wiped out several villages with landslides and displaced more than a million people.
United Airlines is planning another big schedule increase for trans-Atlantic travel, in a bet that consumers will continue to shell out for international trips, some of which they had put off for years. Next summer, United says it will fly to 37 cities in Europe, Africa, India and the Middle East, a total it said is more than other U.S. airlines combined. London's Heathrow Airport warned Tuesday that travel demand is "uncertain." It will also offer flights from Washington Dulles International Airport to Berlin on a Boeing 767, starting May 25. Its additions include a nonstop from to Geneva, more London service and a resumption of daily Berlin flights, all from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.
